Thankfully, I didn’t have any nightmares while trying to locate the Girls’ Life office building. I arrived early and was surprised (read: freaked out) to find that I was the only intern there yesterday. Because classes for the majority of schools in the area don’t begin until the end of January, not many students are back in Baltimore yet. I was unsure of what my tasks for the day would entail, but once I was set up, I was extremely busy and had no problem working for five hours straight.
Once I learned a little about the magazine and the different positions in the office, I began working in the fashion closet. Companies send clothing samples to use in upcoming issues, so there was a lot to sort through. I was responsible for unpacking any incoming shipments and for sending back old samples. I also had to create inventory checklists to make it easier for when it’s time to send the clothing back to the companies.
It was fun to go through the clothing (there were definitely some pieces that I loved!), but it was a little overwhelming to do it myself. I felt like I was organizing my closet again! However, once I organized the clothing by brand and style, it became much easier to rifle through the stacks and match up the items to my inventory list.
I was able to leave by 3pm so that I could rush off to pick up the kids that I babysit from school. As soon as they got in the car and saw that I was wearing a dress rather than my usual workout clothes, they asked me several questions about my internship. The little boy was incredulous that I would actually work for free. Once I explained to him the concept of an internship, he said, “Well, at least you’re dealing with clothes—which you love!”
While working in the fashion industry certainly is not all glamorous, it definitely is not The Devil Wears Prada, either. The editor who I’m working under is incredibly sweet and is far from another Miranda Priestly. I’ve already learned a great amount and I’m hoping to learn even more today.
I’ve received a few questions about what I’m wearing to my internship and what kind of lunch I’m packing, so I’m working towards including those into my post. Since I don’t have a designated lunch break, it’s easier for me to pack a variety of snacks that I can eat throughout the day. For today, I packed a banana, a gala apple, a clementine, a handful of grapes, a small Greek yogurt, and a string cheese. It’s low in protein, but took me only a few minutes to throw together this morning.
I just finished babysitting (I have a morning job) and now I’m at Starbucks answering a few blog-related emails before I have to head to the office. I babysit again this afternoon, so it’s a long day, but I like the change of pace. Plus, the kids never fail to entertain me and keep me in a good mood!
Have you ever had a Miranda Priestly in your work environment? The Miranda Priestley-types that I’ve encountered have actually helped me learn to be more assertive, which is definitely important in this particular industry.
What do you like to pack for lunch when you have a long day at work?
Good luck with everything!!! PS. I own that striped skirt hanging on that front rack 🙂
Thanks, Tanya!! That picture is from Glamour magazine’s fashion closet so you are on trend! 😉
P.S. Haven’t seen ya in a while! Guess I need to make a trip to Club O’Donnell!
The working world kinda sucks sometimes, but you learn to deal.. I have had my shares of bad bosses.. bleh. But I am happy now 🙂
I like to pack lots of fruit and snacks for a long day 🙂
I completely agree–if you’re willing to make it work, it will work.
Packing snacks for a long work day is a great idea! I do the same. In fact, I have a stash of Kellogg’s FIberPlus(R) cereal and a couple of pieces of fresh fruit in my desk at all times to help me get through the day when I don’t have time for a long lunch break. It helps me stay focused as I get important tasks accomplished.
Glad to hear that day one went well!
For lunch, I usually pack leftovers from dinner or a sandwich. I also usually have a Chobani + some sort of “crunch” (baked chips, pretzels, etc.).
Sandwiches are my favorite, but they’re hard to eat if I’m not sitting at my desk. I do love a cup of Chobani for a snack, though!
I have a desk and fridge, so it may be a little different, but I have tons of protein bars, yogurt, sandwich stuff and the likes at work.
So exciting about your internship!! Congrats and have fun!
I don’t have my own desk where I can keep food, but there is lots of popcorn in the kitchen! And candy…but that’s a whole different story.
That sounds like an awesome experience!!! Good luck. When I used to be at school for like 12 hour days, I would pack like 3 meals!! I’m so thankful I can go home for lunch at my current job.
I’m going to have to do that! I had to do that last semester, too. I packed a huge cooler of food and kept it in my car all day!
Thankfully all my bosses have been pretty cool! I haven’t had a lot of glamorous jobs, but now I’m in marketing and I love it 🙂
Marketing is likely where I’m headed!
Your internship sounds great and I’m glad that she is nothing like Miranda Priestly. Haha. I can’t wait to hear more about your internship! 🙂
It’s definitely a relief!
I work from home now, so I have access to food all day (um, not always a good thing, haha). When I used to go into the office I ate out most of the time (not good for the wallet!). I was lucky to have some super healthy restaurants nearby. I would occasionally bring Lunabars or an apple. If I did pack a lunch it was usually leftovers. Oh, and I always had gum and water! Good luck with your new internship!
Definitely not a good thing (for me at least!). Luckily, my office isn’t near many food places, so I don’t have to worry about spending money on lunch. I wish I could eat Luna bars (they’re my favorite!), but I discovered about a year ago that I’m allergic to an ingredient in them.
I’m glad I found your blog… looks like you have a new reader!!
Glad you found me, too! Thanks, Chelsa!
Sounds like a great internship and like it’s going to be a great fit! I interned for a summer in college for a PR company in LA, and I had a Miranda-esque boss – it was interesting to say the least! But the perks (premieres, parties, and swag) were enough for me to deal with a summer of odd demands!
Haha, I’m sure there was never a dull moment! The perks definitely make up for a less than ideal boss!
It is like you are working on The Hills!!! Oh. My. Gosh! That clothes closet looks like chaotic fun! 🙂 It sounds like you are going to have some amazing opportunities! YAY!
I actually have worked for a Miranda before–it was NOT good. I still have nightmares. I am also a super weenie and I take EVERYTHING personally, so it was not good. I really need to get a thicker skin, I think working for a Miranda just made my skin thinner. 😦
Haha, so many people have said the same thing–it definitely is similar!
The good thing is that I don’t take most things personally, but it really bothers me when I feel like I can’t stand up for myself. I’ve had a few issues with speaking up (perhaps a little too much!).
Thats great you are doing something you love and will totally benefit you in the future! Good luck and have fun with it 🙂 I like to pack my lunch for school usually veggies, chicken and quinoa, or a pbj.
Thanks! I’m really happy that I have the opportunity to do something that I love. It definitely makes the experience positive!
Sounds like you’ll get the hang of it in no time! If I know I’m going to be busy, I do like you and just pack as many random snacks and things as I can get together. It works when you’re on the go.
Packing snacks has been the easiest for me. That way, I can eat while I’m running around the fashion closet searching for clothes!
I don’t work in fashion but I’ve had more than one Miranda Priestly type bosses! So glad I don’t now though! I love not having a designated lunch, too! My lunch often looks a lot like yours did today!
I definitely think that “intense” bosses can teach you a lot, but I also find that it changes the dynamic in the work environment. Glad you don’t have that problem anymore!
That internship looks so fun! I graduate in May and am trying to figure out what kind of job I want after school… it’s so stressful. In the summer I lifeguard about 10 hours a day so I usually spend every night throwing together a nice big salad and cutting up some fruit. Or I’ll hit up Subway sometimes for their amazing veggie subs 🙂
I feel your stress–it is so overwhelming to begin the job search. I try to stay positive though and remember that everything happens for a reason, even if I might not land a position right away. Good luck with the process!
When I nanny during the summer, we often spend several hours at the pool and all I crave is cold fruit. The sun dehydrates me an unbelievable amount!
That actually sounds pretty exciting! I look forward to seeing what else this internship might bring! Good luck!
Thank you! I’m excited to see where it takes me as well! It has been a really great learning experience so far.
I think it’s great that you have this internship! It sounds like you are going to get a lot of experience, and thank goodness you aren’t dealing with a Miranda Priestly! I think personalities like that are frustrating, but they always make an impact!
I’ve already learned a ton so far–I can’t wait to gain even more exposure. You are so right, you can really grow from working with a Miranda Priestly-type.
Wow! What an incredible internship opportunity! Can’t wait to hear more about it! I never really thought about what magazines do with all the products they’re sent. I guess it makes sense to send some of it back… Do they send it back if they don’t use it? Or just if it’s old?
Basically, PR companies send out samples that are intended to be used in photo shoots for brand exposure. It depends on the company, but most request that the clothing items be returned after the specific magazine issue is finished. For example, we are currently in the process of returning items from the December and January issues while unpacking items for the April and May issue. In terms of beauty samples, the magazine usually keeps everything, whether they are used or not.
Love this!! How awesome and exciting for you!
Thanks, Andrea!
