Macho Man

On Thursday night, my brother participated in a long-lasting tradition at his middle school. Each year, the 8th grade students are given the chance to do an end-of-the-year performance. A general theme is selected, then students formulate groups and create a dance to a song of their choice. They also have to lip-synch, making it necessary to know the lyrics.

When I was in the 8th grade, I participated in Lipstock with three of my friends. The theme that year was the ’80s, so we lip-synched and danced to Madonna’s “Material Girl.” Though we didn’t place in the competition, we still had a lot of fun. The only downside was that we each had about a gallon of hairspray left in our hair by the end of the night. That was not easy to wash out!

Brian and his friends chose to perform to the song “Macho Man,” as this year’s theme was disco. His group ended up being the only group composed of all boys, but they surprisingly did extremely well. While some of the girl groups had excellent dancers, the boys group was simply hilarious. As soon as the curtain opened, the entire crowd was laughing hysterically, and for good reason.

Earlier that afternoon, Brian’s group came over our house to make some finishing touches on their costumes. With the help of his lovely sisters, their outfits came together fabulously. I even had a hand in making a prop and contributed to his costume; I helped paint “50lbs” onto a barbell and provided a pair of my running shorts for Brian’s use.

Ali was able to film most of it, and it really was hilarious. Check it out if you’re looking for a laugh! They actually ended up winning a well-deserved third place!

Jen and Zach just came over to go swimming, so I’m going to go hang out by the pool for the afternoon!
